POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Assistant Controller is a growth-oriented position designed to onboard an experienced accounting professional into Juna’s client service model, workflows & technology stack.
The Assistant Controller works as part of Juna’s team to provide accurate and timely financial information to a variety of small to mid-sized clients, primarily in the technology, life science and professional services industries. The Assistant Controller will manage smaller clients as well as support Juna’s Controllers on larger engagements. Engagement management includes ensuring the accuracy of financial information, financial reporting, financial analysis, mentoring & management of Accounting Associates and streamlining operations using best in class technology.
The Assistant Controller will begin with a six (6) month onboarding period serving in an Accounting Associate capacity. During this period, the Assistant Controller will focus on learning:
- Juna’s accounting workflows & internal controls
- Client service model and concierge level standards
- Cloud-based technology stack & integrations
- Documentation standards and quality control procedures

Phase 1: Accounting Associate (1st Six Months)
Outcome: Develop mastery of Juna’s processes, procedures, technologies, documentation standards and client workflows.
RESPONSIBILITIES: vary by client and include:
- Perform full-cycle cash and accrual basis accounting including, A/R, A/P, payroll and monthly close
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and maintain organized workpapers
- Utilize cloud-based technologies and related integrations with QBO, BILL, Double (formerly Keeper), FinOptimal, Ramp, Right Tool, ShareFile, Google Workspace and others.
- Assist onboarding new clients including account clean up
- Create & maintain revenue recognition schedules & reconciliations
- Exceed client expectations by delivering accurate, timely financial info
- Learn Juna’s financial reporting standards, KPIs and variance analysis procedures
- Develop proficiency in Juna’s documentation and internal control procedures
- Participate in team meetings, one-on-ones and training sessions
- Demonstrate readiness for client-facing leadership responsibilities
Progression to Assistant Controller will be based on demonstrated technical competence, workflow mastery, leadership readiness and alignment of Juna’s core values.
Phase 2: Assistant Controller (Post Training)
Upon successful completion of the initial phase, responsibilities expand to include:
Client Management & Oversight
- Manage smaller client engagements independently
- Support Controllers on larger client engagements
- Provide concierge-level client service
- Review associate’s work and ensure appropriate segregation of duties
- Oversee and monitor accounting services including A/R, A/P, payroll and financial reporting processes
Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Manage accrual-based accounting cut-off including entries for revenue recognition, accruals and prepaids and maintaining workpapers and reconciliations
- Prepare financial statements, KPI reports, variance analysis and custom reporting
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and provide overall quality control
- Develop and maintain client budgets and forecasts
- Review and pay client bills
- Liaise with client’s external accountants to assist with annual tax return and audit/review procedures
- Assist clients with preparation of audit schedules.
Process Improvement & Leadership
- Implement, document and maintain strong control procedures
- Coach, mentor and train Accounting Associates
- Assist in onboarding new team members
- Collaborate with the Accounting Project Manager during the client onboarding process
- Identify workflow efficiencies and technology improvements
- Provide clean up services for new clients as needed
- Receive and provide continuous training and keep abreast of the latest technologies
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive General Ledger accounting experience
- Solid understanding of GAAP and applicable regulations
- Advanced excel skills (Power Query and/or Power BI a plus)
- Experience with Google Workspace, Google Sheets
- Experience with QuickBooks Online (required)
- Quickbooks Pro Advisor or Quickbooks Pro Advisor Level 2 certifications (preferred)
- Ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving technology environment
- Experience with Double (formerly Keeper) ShareFile, Google Workspace, Asana, Slack, BILL, FinOptimal, Right Tool, Fathom reporting or other FP&A software and Ramp is a plus
- Works well independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead team members
- Experience and desire to manage multiple clients simultaneously
- Comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment and the ability to pivot as needed
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- A dedicated office space that has a reliable, high-speed internet connection
- Must be able to maintain a professional and distraction-limited work environment during scheduled work hours and meetings
